Gay Fund Raisers Help Community

The Cardinal Court is a group of gay men and women involved in fund raising efforts for charities within the community. Based at the Raiders Bar in Sandusky, the Court was established in 1979 by Michael Lee, a local performer. Lee brought the idea from the West and began the group as an offshoot of the Silver Dollar Court, a similar group in Reno, Nevada. The Silver Dollar is known for the annual sponsorship of the Gay Rodeo.

Now in their third year, the Cardinal Court is guided by David James and Pat. "We're like a gay shriners group but not as large," said Pat. "The charitable philosophies of the two groups are similar, except currently we are focusing on gay community support." "If gays don't look out for other gays who will . . . " James explained.

The group raises funds in a variety of ways. The Court has a performing group called the Cardinal Follies: most recently the Follies performed at the Lambda Bar. On June 19th the Follies will be in Mansfield to perform at The Gathering.

fundraising activities. In the past the Court has donated money to the Ohio Gay and Lesbian Rights Coalition for the booth at the Ohio State Fair, associations for the mentally retarded and other public service groups.

"We usually take a hiatus in the winter. The rest of the year is a more productive time for the kind of events we hold," stated James. Other events to be held by the Court or in conjunction with it, are an August 8th picnic, a campout, and last fling of summer and a fundraiser for the New HIGH GEAR.
